The Raymond and Frances Bushell Collection of Netsuke: A Legacy at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Because traditional Japanese clothing had no pockets, people hung small objects such as purses, writing cases, and smoking utensils on braided silk cords tucked under the belt or sash. A netsuke is a small carved bob that holds the upper end of the cord at the top of the belt. Color photographs, sometimes several each, illustrate 847 pieces of the utilitarian object that evolved into an elaborate art form over the centuries. Captions describe and date the pieces and point out their characteristics. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
