Franz Kafka contó alguna vez que soñó que recitaba, ante un auditorio completamente hipnotizado, un texto y este texto era La educación sentimental, su novela favorita. Muchos críticos menosprecian esta obra para ensalzar sobre todo a Madame Bovary, pero como lo ha sentenciado Magris: "si después de La educación sentimental no se hubieran publicado más novelas, sin duda habríamos perdido muchas y bellísimas páginas, pero nuestro conocimeinto de la realidad y del mundo no sería sustancialmente mucho mayor". El espectáculo que nos entrega Flaubert, es la historia de un joven provinciano, idealista y enamoradizo, que se desdibuja en el devenir de sus días en París, entre miserias personales, desilusiones cobradas con bajezas y la pudiente sociedad burguesa retratada en sus fiestas extravagantes, amoríos, adulterios...Al final, el desencanto de una vida.
