En la época de Chaucer, la ciudad de Canterbury era muy popular por la visita que los peregrinos de distintos sitios de Inglaterra hacían a la catedral, para buscar la curación de sus males y enfermedades, pues ahí se encuentran los restos de Saint Thomas Beckett. Algunos de esos peregrinos son los narradores de estos Cuentos eróticos de Canterbury. Así, la peregrinación es el motivo central y cada personaje relata su historia. De esta manera, existe una idea básica: contar una anécdota, con la posibilidad de ser interpretada así: la vida es un peregrinaje. Las historias que aquí se publican tienen la característica de referirse al tema amoroso. Así, el molinero, la comadre de Bath, el administrador, el intendente, el mercader e incluso el párroco, nos entregan una anécdota sobre el sexo, el matrimonio o la lujuria.
